A court concubine of low caste, she was sold into servitude by her parents against their debts. Heavily trained but ‘inferior’ as her caste would be taken, she was treated as spoils and repeatedly traded, abused, and otherwise re-trained in the darker arts of combat and sacrifice as she grew older and her value as a concubine declined. Now of thirty years, unusually old in itself, her latest liege was slain by betrayal as she stood over him in the fight—and she was left there to rot amongst the blood and death: too costly to kill and not worth enslaving yet again. She was cast adrift in an unstructured, barbaric world, largely unable to think past her next few meals as she struggled with her training, sense of failure, and the dark magics that had been manifested in her.
Eventually captured again by Hyrkanian nomads, she was used to train warriors until her sale to, and release by, a roaming Stygian priestess. Li-Ling and the Stygian find their skills complementary; Li-Ling’s battle order and thirst for theology to control her demons, to Yserus’ fundamentalism of Set, and inexperience in field-craft.
Both emotionally immature yet wise beyond years (in some ways), Li-Ling (“white jasmine tinkling”) balances childish behavior off the field with myrmidon-like behavior in combat. Fearless, tireless, and merciless, she is driven by cold blood-rages and crashes hard emotionally after bloody fights. She is ever modulated, expressing few highs or lows unless fighting or immediately after. When pressed, her emotions boil over in dangerously unpredictable ways. She is not a broken slave; rather, Li-Ling is a loose cannon that can go off unexpectedly unless handled properly.

Roget Silvercloud idly munches on an apple, collecting the seeds along the way. Yumi Delvalle > Noting the familiar clothes and form of the person upon the bench, Yumi hurried over. And, grabbing a fallen branch from the boughs of the tree, she took the twig and began to make it dance across the man’s […]

I always have images in my head to music, sometimes telling an independent story and sometimes complementing an existing roleplay if I’m heavily engaged in one. This is a particularly powerful scene sequence for me, especially with the end of the Harry Potter/magic roleplays with Venturi Muromachi that I’d been engaged in. The imagery goes […]

Burn the incense of dragons’ bane and light the oil lamps about the altar; not of Satan does it reminisce but instead the orgiastic frenzy of pagans ritualizing the passing of seasons as we doth tend to the fires of Summer. Folds of red, black, and white satin hide the padding and eyelets for chain […]

Being a roleplayer has its disadvantages. Sometimes people you communicate with virtually won’t be able to tell which is the “real you” and which is a persona, confused such as they are with the variety of characters I might play that they’re familiar with. One time I created a ‘me’ character in Second Life that […]

Hanging out in Khitai watching the field for Corrupted Yaks to hunt, I came to the realization that quest operations in Age of Conan were to be so moronically obvious to even the most illiterate of person that they were insulting my intelligence. To quote an “Uphill, both ways” sort of remark, I recall in […]

Avatar construction is probably the most fun, yet least thought out part of roleplaying. For my own part, I usually write up a blurb or two (or at least ruminate) on the personality of the character and how some of those traits might manifest themselves in within the (often limited) scope of personalization options given […]
